"Teachers must help students be confident, engaged mathematics learners....Teachers at those [middle grades and high school] levels should work to keep students involved in relevant classroom activities, assign projects that make connections between mathematics and students' daily lives, and allow students multiple avenues to display what they have learned...They[teachers] have the responsibility that a full range of mathematical content and processes, such as those described in this document, are taught and the mathematical emphasis fit together into a coherent whole." -From Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, NCTM, 2000
"[Maryland should] provide all teachers of mathematics with regularly scheduled, meaningful development opportunities in mathematics and mathematics education....Teachers should incorporate the use of such[calculators, computers and internet connections for class work and homework] technology into the delivery of mathematics instruction" -From Keys to Success, June 2001 report from the Maryland Mathematics Commission
