Note: Please share this information with colleagues. We expect this to be an informative, productive, and professionally rewarding opportunity to build partnerships and make concrete plans for introducing new programs in your region/school/university. Our intended audience are mathematics educators in mathematics and education departments at the university level, ideally teamed with K-12 mathematics teachers (see below).
Below:
"I just wanted to let you know that I became Nationally Board Certified!!!
I could not have done it without your help and guidance. The ADEPT courses
were by far the best professional development I have ever had, and it
showed on my test scores and the quality of the lessons/papers I
had to write. Thanks again! " -Christine Green, Stephen Decatur Middle School.
Math ADEPT is overviewed at http://barzilai.org/nsf/about-adept.html (web page adapted from flyer for teachers).
In addition to the features outlined in the above URL, ADEPT incorporates an innovative mix of Teaching Assistants drawn largely from veteran school teachers; Curricular Resource Binders ADEPT teachers have as a permanent resource after they have completed the courses, and their Modified Lesson Plans (MLPs) portfolios.
The MLP assignments teachers complete in each ADEPT course are at the heart of the ADEPT program. They keep the curriculum and pedagogy of the ADEPT classes tied intimately to the needs of today's public schools, and allow ADEPT instructors to customize the courses to the more specific local needs of area schools. We will also explore how the Modified Lesson Plans based model relates to Japanese style lesson study and other paths towards teacher professional development.
II) "What will we do at the ADEPT Summer 2005 K-16 Workshop?"
The Summer 2005 Workshop that is three days long will provide an immersion experience for participating K-16 Teams (college and university faculty teamed with school personnel/teachers) that will allow participants to conceptualize and internalize the ADEPT program, to understand how ADEPT works, and to adapt the program to that team's local or regional needs. Ideally, therefore, participants will be part of a team; however we will accept individuals for participation.
Information is below on how you can officially apply to participate in the workshop. You can do this as an individual at this time, and we encourage you in the meantime to find postsecondary colleagues, and particularly K-12 people in your area who might be excited about joining you for this workshop. ADEPT is focused on middle school mathematics teaching but the ADEPT model can be modified for other K-12 levels as well.
Ideally a K-16 team would consist of 3 to 4 people; e.g., university faculty teamed with a math teacher or mathematics supervisor; other teams might be mathematics faculty joining education faculty from the same university; or university faculty from two nearby institutions in the same region. The ADEPT K-16 Workshop is meant to empower you and your teams to build, together, a concrete implementation plan for starting and moving forward with some adaptation of the Math ADEPT program, or portions thereof, to meet the mathematics education needs of your state and region, those of your schools and the mission of your university.
III) "Sounds great! Where and when will the workshop be held?"
The workshop will be held at Salisbury University on Maryland's Eastern Shore, a location close to the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean where beaches and national seashores abound (there will be a day-trip to Ocean City and/or Assateague National Seashore where ponies run wild http://www.nps.gov/asis/ )
The workshop is planned for Sat/Sun/Mon June 25-27, optional retreat/beach trip Tue June 28. Arrive Friday June 24 p.m.; Depart Tue (28th) mid-day, or join retreat and depart or Wed June 29, 2005.
Teams and individuals accepted to participate in the workshop will have full room and board covered, and full or partial travel expenses (we have budgeted an average of up to $650 per person). Curricular materials will also be given out which you will take back with you
IV) "I don't have a full team right now but I think I'm interested, what do I do next?"
a. Send us an email as soon as possible to let us know of your interest, and we will send you a fuller application asking for fuller information. We also ask that you finalize the teams no later than the end of January 2005. hxbarzilai[at-sign]salisbury.edu hwaustin[at-sign]salisbury.edu
